Although this is pretty much considered *the* biography on Depeche Mode, I couldn't give it higher than a middling grade. It lost one star for the sheer number of typos and punctuation issues alone. Em-dashes and en-dashes were used inconsistently and inaccurately, making it necessary to read some sentences several times over to understand what was being said. The style also fluctuated between British and American, and exclamation points (which I personally cannot stand unless they are absolutely called for) were so abundant that the book sometimes read like a tabloid. All of these issues combined made me wonder if the pages had even been seen by an editor.

The tome could have been drastically shortened by eliminating many of the quotes, some of which offered no insight and others which just rehashed info that had already been stated. How many times do we have to be told that Fletch wore slippers on stage during the band's early days?

Several other readers have commented on the amount of attention given to the technology, and that they felt it detracted from the story. I agree to some extent, in that the injected information sometimes ruined the flow of the narrative, but I also believe that some degree of this background had to be included in a story about one of the most influential electronic bands in music history. It wasn't why I read the book, but it did underscore just how much research was done by the author.

You have to be a diehard fan to enjoy this read, and even then, you need to have a burning desire for minutiae. You do get a smidgeon of insight into each band member's personality (as well as a lot of info about side projects and offshoots such as Erasure and Yaz), but there's not much more than what you can get from all the numerous videos and interviews readily available on the web.

I read it as a reference for a map of DM-related locations I'm creating, and for that it was a goldmine. But I'd have a hard time recommending this to even the most zealous Devotee.

Once upon a time I fancied reading a book about Depeche Mode. So I bought this one because it had the best reviews. I'm not an expert on DM, or band biographies.
The book is informative and thorough. I would say it's above average. There are several photo inserts, and the quality of print is good for a paperback. The aspect of it that fell below my expectations was the writing - it's reads kind of awkward and a bit denser that I expected. Maybe it's a British thing.
I found this to be a very difficult book to put down. It is packed with tons of info and insights into the personalities within the band. If you are a Depeche Mode fan, this is a must, you won't be dissapointed.

On the other side of the coin, however, there are lots of quotes taken from EPKs and the short film from the 86>98 DVD, which, of course, most fans have already seen.

Also, there was some info about Martin Gore being half black, which lacks credibility. The source who revealed the information was just called a "child hood friend". Then there's also that annoying fact that Martin bares absolutely no African features (nor do his children).

The writing style does get a bit drab from time to time. All and all, however, I give it 5 stars for simply being a fairly accurate chronology of my favorite band.

Pain and suffering in various tempos
This is a fantastic book! I had problems with got it delivered from to Moscow, and was waiting for it for three months but it was worth waiting! The book appeals to real fans of DM because it tells very detailed and meticulous story of the band and what was around the band in the UK and other countries where they became synthpop stars. I'm still in the mid of the book, and by now I know the background of first three DM albums, and guess what, now I can recognize to what album any DM record/single belongs from the first seconds when the music starts playing because each and every album has some special things and the book reveals why the sound is this or that at that particular time and what it took for the band to create the sound, who contributed what to a song. This is really documentary, effectively, it is made up from the band members intervews to music reviews and magazines and critics articles. I find thourough description of syntesizers a bit boring and too technical, but this is my personal opinion, some people could think the other way. To resume, Stripped is indeed great biograthy of the DM and it is worth reading it!
This is undoubtedly the best general biography of the band. It is filled with tons of details. There are 4 reasons to get this book over the others

1-It is written by a fan. This may at first mean he is biased, but in reality it means that his approach to the band is fair and balanced and honest, and not at all exploitative (unlike non-fan Steve Malins' tabloid-ish book).

2-It covers the background of electronic music, and its emergence.

3-It covers the equipment/instruments (some may find this distracting, but you can't really cover the biggest electronic band in the world and not mention their synths!).

4-Unlike other books, this book is less about "Depeche Mode the band", and more "Depeche Mode the individuals". Thus it covers the five members, including Clarke and Wilder even after they leave.

Many fans will dislike this book, not least because it actually dares to treat with respect Vince Clarke, a brilliant man who nevertheless is hated/belittled among a segment of D.M.'s fan base ("How dare he not write self-indulgent supposedly 'dark brooding' music?!?!").

The book does not go up to the present, but then given D.M.'s recent musical output, that's not a big loss.

Highly recommended for true fans (minus the rabid anti-Clarke types, ofcourse).
