Am on my sixth read. This is perfect romance. Adele at 35 has been without a good date for 3 years. She calls it a curse....and it is. It is a "gift" from another woman. Her high school nemesis not only made her teenage life miserable but got pregnant on purpose in college to get Adele's lover. Fourteen years later Adele is back in her hometown to help her pregnant sister and finds herself back in a relationship with the now widowed Zach. Lots of steamy sex and she can't help falling for him again. In the way of her happiness is his lack of commitment, his jealous daughter, his jealous dead wife, who was the cause of the curse, and a surprise. Gibson is so good at blending romance, humor and a little pathos that I can read this book over and over. The one caveat that I have with the story is that of the sister. She does not get a happy ending and I always wanted Gibson to write a novella giving her one. I still give it five stars as I only do that for books I will read again.Tags : Not Another Bad Date (Writer Friends) [Rachel Gibson] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Unexpectedly meeting your first love from college, who left you for his pregnant previous girlfriend, isn't something any woman wants to happen when your 35 and still single. Going back to her hometown to help take care of her pregnant soon to be divorced sister and her teenage niece brings a second chance for love. Hilarious, hot sex and an emotional roller coaster, GIbson has another can't put it down book!!!!
Out of the four book series I liked this book the best. Everytime I need a lift or a break between other books I pull out this book to read. It is an easy read and doesn't get boring. How many times have women had their hearts broken by their first true love? Alot is my guess. It was fun to see the story unfolding with all the problems that rekindling a relationship can cause. I wish that Rachel Gibson would have gone into more detail at the end of the book. Like, did Adele agree to live in Devon's house or did they sale it and buy a house that the two of them choose? Why did they wait so long to get married? I would have thought Adele would have gotten married before she was 7 months along and looking like a whale. All in all, this was a great read and do not understand why there were so many negative reviews, unless those folks never have experienced a love that went horribly wrong.
I loved this book! It had characters that I cared about and was well written.
At first I was kind of worried about the 'after-life' character... but really it was just a silly explanation of what was happening to the main characters... it ended up being a funny part of the story... obviously having nothing to do with reality... but honestly, do these romance stories ever match reality? If they did, I probably wouldn't read them (i.e. if reality was that great, who'd need to read these books, OR if the books were like reality, they wouldn't be as entertaining....
Anyway... I enjoyed the book, much like I enjoyed Susan Elizabeth Phillips' books with football players as the main male character.
I share many of the other reviewers' disappointment with this book and with this series of Rachel Gibson's. It is hard to believe this is the same author as the one who wrote "See Jane Score" and "Truly Madly Yours" or "True confessions", except that parts seem lifted directly from the latter. Strangely, the most readable and enjoyable parts of the story were the every day life bits rather than the "romance". There really wasn't much romance or love at all -- lots of lust and a jerk of a hero. And the lack of groveling by the Hero at the end is just inexplicable after his pretty unforgivable behavior. If this is your first Rachel Gibson you might want to go to her earlier works. This one is just not good.
Lovely language- very literary and humorous. I'm not even going to go into the story at all except to say it was one of the most satisfying reads I've had in a long time. Rachel Gibson ranks right up there with Jennifer Crusie.
This is the final book in the Writer Friends Quartet, and unfortunately, it shows. Adele was spunky throughout the other 3 books, and in this one, she's not. The whole story feels forced. Read this if you're a Gibson fan and want to finish out the Quartet. Otherwise, it's not a memorable story.
A co-worker recommended this jewel, and I'm so glad I followed up on her suggestion. Rachel Gibson's writing style is similar to my outlook on life--sarcastic, humorous and filled with a little whimsy. Adele Harris is a 30 something woman who's been through a string of bad dates. With all of her friends newly married and her sister in the perfect marriage, Adele is convinced her life is cursed. The only man she ever loved (Zach Zemaitis) became a famous NFL celebrity and married a woman who's made Adele's life a living hell since the 6th grade.
In a strange twist of fate, Adele moves back to the small town she grew up in to take care of her pregnant sister, whose perfect husband has left her for another woman. Imagine Adele's shock when she runs into Zach after 14 years. And guess what? His wife (the one who made Adele's life a living hell) died in a horrible accident three years before.
This book is hysterical from beginning to end. My kind of humor. My kind of romance. My kind of happy ending. I highly recommend.
