I very much enjoyed this book and would recommend it. I especially enjoyed the use of tone in their writing as they captured somber moments or described humorous situations. Several stories served up a Southern flavor that cannot be replicated or imitated: there are no Quick Grits in this book. Although some have a regional flavor, the stories by these world travelers living in the South are by no means provincial. There are stories of women who dreamed of more, strived for more, but who made the most of what they had in front of them to work with. The toil and sweat in some stories hangs like a husband's work shirt flung across the back of a good dining room chair. There are stories of quiet and unrequited love, passion and tragedy. Those stories are balanced by tales of joy punctuated by keen wit. "The Moon and the Stars" even reminded me of an Edgar Alan Poe story. Be The Flame is a delightful read. In the tradition of strong southern literary women, The Mystics have put together a group of stories that are enjoyable, intriguing and thought provoking.
Each story is a little gem, to be savored, thought about and re-read.
I would say, "Be the Flame" is a definite buy.
I would buy it for the cover alone. I want it as a poster!
I just attended a wonderful reading by the The Mystic Order of East Alabama Fiction Writers at the Carson McCullers house in Columbus. If you have the opportunity to see the Alabama Mystics read from their work, you should jump at it. The writing is a lot of fun, and the reading even more so. Also, if their publisher is bringing food to the event, come hungry, his cooking rivals their writing and you will not be disappointed with either.
As bubbly as the champagne in a morning mimosa, as refreshing as an afternoon gin and tonic, and as dark and mysterious as an aged burgundy, "Be the Flame" is all this. Go ahead, add it to your collection, but keep it on a nearby table so you can take frequent sips. In fact, buy a case and give them as gifts so you can share with your friends the subtle humor and wisdom of the South.
"Be the Flame" is a collection of short stories and poems from a mystical group of women writers living in Auburn, Alabama. The selections are sometimes humorous, sometimes melancholy or thought provoking but always entertaining. Enjoy these snapshots from the lives of women who are old enough to be wise and sassy enough to be interesting. Add to that a dash of good solid, southern storytelling and you have a book worthy to add to your collection.
Be the Flame is full of delightful stories about love, marriage, passion, death, betrayal, even murder and suicide--all with plenty of surprise and drama, equally balanced with deeply imagined characters and vividly wrought details of setting. From an ode to Pluto to a disappointing honeymoon, this Southern collection of short stories, poems, essays and witty chapter illustrations, reveals the joyous and sometimes painful ripples of influence mystery has on our everyday lives.
Throughout my reading, I was constantly reminded of my Mississippi childhood. Each story immediately creates innumerable joys through the revelation of peculiar small town characters, that are particularly Southern, like cocky lowlifes with guns, a delusional fossil hoarder, massage parlor Johns, and even a cafe waitress cum circus star! All of the characters, even the minor ones exist in a revealed history that allow the reader to witness the often minor and fleeting, yet life-altering eruptions of the emotional earthquakes of daily life both large and small.
Entire worlds are caught in an amber of memory. Most of the stories have the quality of folk art painting about them--sly regional humor, a hard materiality, patient amplitude and vivid Southern color. In the South, we call this kind of book,"A come to Jesus meeting," which means upon engaging it, a jolt of immediate recognition of some long sought answer emerges alongside the meditative pleasure of some perceived conflict resolved. This collection does what all good books should, it leaves your spirit feeling mysteriously satisfied. I look forward to the next collection from this talented group of artists.
Be the Flame is both fun and profound and should be on the bookshelves of those who aren't afraid of a little Southern dash on their to-be-read list. The women of The Mystic Order of East Alabama Fiction Writers are skilled storytellers and accomplished artists and know exactly how to leave the faint taste of mint juleps in the mouths of their readers and the desire to put the top down. The voices of the characters are strong, even succulent and will resonate with the reader for days as will the deftly-approached themes of marriage and divorce, living and dying -- staple life ingredients everyone can relate to. Even the way the book is put together is original and clever. Preceding each writer's works is her portrait as "mystic," and following each group of works is the author's short bio. Ultimately, Be the Flame is a well-written, well-constructed book both men, but particularly women can enjoy while swinging lazily on a porch swing or anywhere else after the chores are done and the day is about through.
