At the age of eighteen, the gorgeous Evelyn Davis was starting out on a promising career as a fashion model in Milan, Italy when she receives a taunting video from a serial killer showing her family's murder. Her life changed irrevocably in that moment. Her personal tragedy drove her to study and become one of the best psychological profilers for the police. She can never bring her family back but she can help to stop psychopaths from destroying other families. Fifteen years later as a detective in the Seattle PD she runs across what looks like family suicide murders strikingly similar to her own history. She believes that a serial killer is at work and has to prove it and track the perpetrator down. But this case is different from the start and as it becomes more personal at every turn she wonders if she's the catalyst.

Marcus Moretti is an FBI agent assisting the Seattle PD but he has an agenda. The FBI has tried to recruit Evelyn for a special task force which she has repeatedly turned down. Working with her Marcus hopes to get an insight into the woman and find a way to bring her back to the bureau. What he didn't expect was the reality of the woman herself and how she would come to rock his world. She is strong, intelligent, empathic and gorgeous as well as closed off and private. He has to earn her trust to find out what makes the woman tick and once he does his agenda no longer matters, she does.

Evelyn is a woman with great internal strength to have survived such a tragedy and work in the field she does. Marcus makes her want more out of life than the sole focus she's known. She is attracted to him in ways that she hasn't been before. They are a good complement to each other but the romance is overshadowed by the darker story line. Their relationship grows slowly but it was appropriate for this couple and I enjoyed watching it flourish in between events. Evelyn needed to feel life again and Marcus is the one to help her.
There are multiple points of view which I always like in a book including that of the serial killer who is unknown to our protagonists though his presence is always close. We never know the domino effect of the decisions we make in our lives. An opportunity for one can be a traumatic loss for another and taking that opportunity could cost you more than you are willing to lose and might even come back to haunt you. After fifteen years of wondering Evelyn will learn the truth of this.

I found this book to be an excellent crime thriller that kept my attention with the addition of a romance. There are gruesome details accounted to us at times so readers beware. There is much emotion, pain and loss and lots of suspense. The villain is truly evil and sadistic. The ending was heart wrenching but the epilogue left you feeling good about the future.

There were two things in the storyline that I still think about after the read, things that really bothered me but they also made quite an impression and the results that ensued were not surprising. One was a question of police procedure which I found not credible and the other was behavior of the heroine that didn't quite mesh with the woman I had found her to be but that could be because she was under a tremendous amount of duress. Do not read further if you dislike spoilers.

1- Ryan taunts the serial killer in the media making things personal and though there is serious concern about it he is just told to go home to his wife and family with no offered protection. I would think that procedurally it was warranted by the police to protect their own under such circumstances.

2- Evelyn was given the guardianship of her partner's son and what does she do? She leaves the safe environment of the police department with a rookie to get coffee nearby but instead goes home to get something putting herself in the line of sight of the killer with no real support. For a woman so intelligent it was a very stupid risk to take and a selfish one considering that she now has a child depending on her for their care.

Dead Don't Lie edition by L R Nicolello Romance eBooks Reviews

WOW!! Such an awesome book from an awesome first time author L.R. Nicolello is amazing! What can I say other than OMG I loved this book! This book was fabulous I was hooked from the first chapter and had such a hard time putting it down and hated that i had to. But was so excited when i got the chance to get back into it. I loved the suspense, the romance, and the thrill it brought with every chapter. I can't wait for the next book "Dead no more" in January 2015. Amazing, amazing amazing book.. A MUST READ!
I am also stunned that this is a debut novel! I stayed up last night to finish it, couldn't get the story out of my head to sleep. The complexity of the mystery kept me reading "just one more" chapter after chapter even while getting spooked - middle of the night was not a good choice for finishing the book! The depth of character devoted to the main characters was brilliant, had me actually cheering Evelyn and Marcus on. Looking forward to this author's next book!
LR Nicolello’s debut suspense novel drew me in from the very beginning.

The characters were “real,” compelling, professional, complex, written with depth.

I enjoyed the lead character, Evelyn; smart, strong, courageous Evelyn. I found myself wanting to help her, cheering for her, crying with her, waiting to see her triumph over this evil and diabolical madman.

Marcus, the supporting character, was exactly that, supporting and encouraging. He knew when to lead and be strong and when to step back and watch Evelyn take charge.

Each character brought reality and emotion to the story.

I loved the plot changes, the right touch of romance, and the skill LR showed to draw the reader into the lives of her characters! LR gave her characters believable technical skills and emotions - incredible. I did not want to put the book down.

I enjoyed the ending of the story as well; the last pages did not leave me scared or worried about the characters. I was able to breathe, yet anticipate the next book; wanting to see what happens next in the lives of those left after the tragedies.

Keep writing LR, you are an exceptional writer!
From the moment the reader is introduced to Evelyn in Dead Don't Lie, you want to be just like her strong, loyal, smart and determined. Plus I want to have a Starbuck's run with her! L.R.'s writing transports the reader to the scenes as (safe) bystanders where you can almost smell the fishy Seattle harbor or hear the creak of the wood in her living room floor, then seamlessly, into the mind of psychopath! The believable but seemingly un-ending twists keep you always rooting for the good guys and wanting to warn them of the nutso who's got a bead on them. I'm usually pretty adept at following the string where an author of suspense is leading, but L.R. kept moving the strings of all my connections around!I literally sat in the grocery store parking lot for an hour tonight to finish the book! When can we pre-order her next book releasing in January? I want it now!
Finally something different! What I loved about this book was that it was unlike most of what is out there right now. The suspense is fast paced, dark, and intense.

A page turner--right from the prologue I was hooked. This story is more weighted toward the suspense than the romance, but that was fine for me.

The author throws some MAJOR and unexpected twists in there that go against most of the standard conventions of romantic suspense. But I loved that! This book evoked an emotional response. The lead characters were very well done, especially Evelyn.

I will definitely be reading her next book. I highly recommend to those suspense and romantic suspense readers who like their suspense on the darker side.
