I'm not normally a fantasy reader, but Game of Thrones and The Hobbit have gotten me more interested in the genre, so when I read Tamara Shoemaker's new fantasy, Kindle The Flame, I was delighted to find it's like Game of Thrones for teens! A little bit of How To Train Your Dragon, a lot of magic creature types familiar from tales like Lord of the Rings, a bit of a Harry Potter feel, and a whole lot of fun.

As a romance reader, I'm totally intrigued by Ayden. He needs to be my new book boyfriend. He's my favorite of the four main characters that Shoemaker weaves throughout the tale. The others have their own charm, as well. Except maybe Sebastian. He's creepy. ;)

I think this book is suitable for a young adult audience - there's some violence, but it's not absurdly graphic like in many books/movies, there are some sexual overtones and hints at sexual action, but they aren't particularly explicit, and the adventures (and issues) facing the protagonists will feel familiar to everyone. OK, maybe not all of the adventures - I've never encountered dragons or pixies. But having crushes on people? Losing people important to me? Struggling to find my place in the world? Yup. Common experiences.

the Flame Heart of a Dragon Book 1 eBook Tamara Shoemaker Reviews

I am an avid fantasy reader and this will be installed on the ‘good shelf’ at my house. You know what I’m talking about. The shelf where you put the books that you really, really like and will be reading again. That shelf.

I enjoyed how each chapter switched perspective, but kept the story cohesive and moving at a steady pace. The switching of perspectives made me feel much more emotionally attached to the four characters as opposed to just reading from one view point and learning about them through another person’s eyes. While some events felt familiar, I still found myself flabbergasted at certain events and in awe of others. The characters are well developed, easy to relate to, and full of fun!

This book, while firmly planted in the Young Adult category, can be enjoyed by everyone. There is mischief, adventure, coming of age, romance, intrigue, and foul play. Basically, it’s everything you want your fantasy books to be. I highly recommend it!
I was hoping the female characters would be stronger and less inclined to be rescued, but this is the first book of a trilogy, so I have high hopes. Good back story, good world-building (very intricate). I don't usually read fantasy, but this engaged me completely.
Tamara truly has a gift for fantasy writing! I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the world and characters created in the Flame. Just like the Mark of Four series, my 14 year old son also read the Flame and could not wait to read the 2nd book!
This is a fast paced exciting novel, given equal attention to the villains POV as well as the main good guys. It was really hard to put down, and I was sad to see it end. I can't wait for the squeal!
There is an evil King, but no don't kill him even though they had opportunity to do so instead allow him to enslave his subjects and hurt innocent people instead. Kinna is nice but no one ever really comes into their own. Very little development in the entire book. Hopefully more progress is made in the next book
This was hands-down one of the best fantasies I have read in a long time! Shoemaker has a fresh voice and creates characters that will stay with you long after you close the cover. I especially adore Cedric and can't wait to see where his and the other characters go next. There are familiar elements like dragons and an evil king. But the way these elements are blended with less commonly seen things (like pixies, mammoths, dryads, and more!) is so different and fun. If you're a fan of fantasy classics (Tolkien, Lloyd Alexander...) as well as modern favorites like Game of Thrones do yourself a favor and download this fun read. I can't wait for the sequel!!
Often about 1/2 or 2/3 through a book, I reach a point where I have to finish reading it without putting it down. I felt that pull after reading the prologue, so I read the book while cooking, eating, etc. I am very anxious for the next book of the series. I downloaded the book because our newspaper had an article about two local authors and was immediately hooked. Good fantasy- the made up words- were skillfully explained in the text, so that glossary at the end seemed unnecessary. There are dragons harmed in this book, so if you have a dragon loving child or grandchild, be sure to read the book first and decide if he or she can handle it. The characters were very well described and compelling. A coming of age book for young adults, in which the adult family members do have wisdom. There is a spiritual context.
