Starcrossed Elizabeth C Bunce Books

I stumbled across this book almost accidentally, but was really glad that I did. The first chapter grabbed my attention and it never waned from there. Digger is a surprisingly realistic character -- you don't get irritated because she's so brash or selfish, nor does she make stupid and careless mistakes because she thinks she's untouchable. She has a remarkable self awareness and was a very likable character. The plot was interesting and kept me guessing. I love a great romance in a book, but it was refreshing that this book didn't need it at all because there were such strong relationships throughout. It was a great book that I highly recommend!

Starcrossed Elizabeth C Bunce Books Reviews

I picked this book up because it was recommended for people who liked The Thief series by Megan Turner. While there are some superficial elements that are similar, I would not say the two compare. Digger in no way had the charm, charisma, or vulnerability of Eugenides. I didn't like Digger; she was selfish and annoying. Why didn't she go to the people she trusted and trusted her? It makes no sense. She doesn't even address it. The plot seemed formulaic and I could anticipate the end from the beginning. Digger seemed feisty and independent when the plot suited, and let herself be menaced and bullied by people because... huh. I guess I'm not really clear why she let herself be threatened by them. And also later try to beat up in a fist fight. Where was her backbone earlier? It annoyed me. Truth be told, I started reading this and completely forgot I was reading it at the last 50 pages. It must have sat for a month under my nightstand until I thought about it, dug it out and finished it. It was ok, but I wouldn't revisit it, and I probably won't read the sequel. However, it's a harmless, and there were things I liked about it. The prince was a likable character. And I liked the magic, how it was done. It may be worth your time as a nice summer read.
Coming into this book I was feeling very pessimisic. I had just finished a book I really enjoyed and I always worry about not enjoying the next book as much. Starcrossed really exceeded my expectations. At the very beginning I did find it hard to get into partially because of my aforementioned pessimism an partially because you drop in on Digger after the beginning of her story.

It didnt take long for me to realize that the story was unwinding in a totaly artful and intriguing way. Digger is an amazing and above all real heroine. Bunce also has a true gift when it comes to complex plot building. The story never ceased grabbing me as it evolved and yet wasnt forced. The side characters, at first strangers and even "marks", bloom into dynamic and complex characters who are heroes in their own right.

The story follows Digger as she escapes the consequences of her thieving lifestyle and assumes an alias with the intention of escaping further into the countryside and finds herself instead trapped with her saviors in a mountain keep where she finds out there is more to them than she realized and ends up having to reveal to them that she has darker secrets than her life as a street thief.

By the end of this book I was awed by how spectacular it was and am now a Bunce fan. I reccomend this book highly to any fantasy fan.

I enjoyed Bunce's A Curse Dark as Gold so I knew that I'd want to read this book by her. I didn't know know anything about the story going in, beyond what's on the book flap so I was caught by surprise about everything. It starts with Digger running from a bad situation and she falls in with a group of young nobles who rescue her and bring her home. The two men in the party leave the story but the two women Lady Merista Nemair and Phandre continue as the family of the former welcomes Digger, now known as Celyn, to go to their estate to prepare for Merista's entrance into adulthood. This part was somewhat confusing and slow as many characters were introduced but nothing really happened.

It was at the estate that the story kicks in to gear. Digger attempts to steal an item from Lord Daul but he catches her and makes her become his informant so he can spy on the people at the estate, who incidentally were all collaborators in a rebellion against the king to restore some freedom of religion. As Digger searches for secrets, she finds much more than she had bargained for and the sequel is perfectly set up.

One of the most interesting aspects to me was the history, politics, and religion of the land. The current king outlawed anything but Celys for worship, especially the magic of Sarists. He also has two nephews who could be heir. One is even more extreme and fanatical while the other is more tolerant and is the hope of the Nemairs and other Sarists. While I found it fascinating, there were some difficult parts as I struggled to follow the names and relationships of everyone-there are a lot of characters but by the end, I knew them.

I also liked that there was very little romance. Digger/Celyn did have feelings for Tegen, a mysterious shadow in her past about whom I want to know more and there were some other relationships but romance was not the main focus, allowing me to focus fully on the mystery. Lord Daul wants Digger to uncover many secrets and bring him a lot of information; because of that experience, she leaves her professional shell behind and begins to become attached to people and to become concerned with politics. She becomes more of a hero instead of a creeping thief, a pleasant transformation to see.

Overall Rich world created, lovable main character, and an engaging mystery!

Cover I like the design-that is a seven-pointed star which is important to the story. While that girl is pretty, she's not gorgeous and thus is less likely to be noticed suiting Digger's profession.
