The fact that his life was at a crossroads prompted the brutal self-examination. The conclusion was not a surprise; his life sucked. William Perkins was twenty-seven years old when he came to the sobering realization that he was a full-fledged nerd who had spent his entire life in academic isolation. His ivory tower sanctuary had protected him from all the bad things in the world; the ups and downs; the threats and uncertainties; even sex. Ironically those were the very things he desperately wished to experience, and he knew they would never happen unless he broke free from his sanctuary. He decided to charge head first into the real world. No matter what happened it would be better than unending sameness. William Perkins longed for some sparkle in his life. On a magical summer day he got his wish. The Candy Man is a tale of avarice and evil, with just a touch of the supernatural. It gives a whole new meaning to the term Hell's Kitchen. You'll probably think it's science fiction, but it isn't. The scary thing is, it might not even be fiction. __ Enjoy!

The main characters in this story are mathematicians and scientists who are trying to solve a deadly puzzle that requires their various skill sets. I’m not good at math or science, but I got sucked into the story because the characters’ lives depend on their ability to help each other understand how the pieces of the puzzle fit together. And the author does a good job getting the characters to explain complex ideas to each other in ways that even I could understand. More than once I got so caught up in what they were talking about that I’d click over and look it up on online just to learn more. Pretty fun scary suspenseful adventure.

The Candy Man edition by Richard Alan Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

This was my first PC book. Wow, what an experience. I'm pretty sure it's the author, though, and not just the novelty of reading a book on my PC. The first few chapters impressed me with the incredible ease of reading. This is the author's first novel, but it has the polish of a very experienced communicator. There's never any ambiguity in the action and you know exactly who is speaking at all times. The pleasurable experience of thoughts effortlessly flowing is the starting-hook for this novel. After the first few chapters the story has gripped you and well before halfway, you cannot put it down. The description above very much undersells this novel. The author has combined philosophy with suspense to a point that is almost disturbing. Around chapter 50, there's an urgency to finish the book just to be able to breathe again. Fortunately, the ending is very satisfying. But there's a twist that makes you want to find someone to talk to; someone important. It is a novel as philosophically gripping as Carl Sagan's Contact or John Pielmeier's Agnes of God. Everyone will find this book a real page-turner. But the deeper impact of both Contact, Agnes of God and now The Candy Man --the part that is disturbing as well as thrilling-- is for philosophically mature readers. When they make this into a movie, the director will probably choose to delay the credits because some in the audience will be so deep in thought they will not see anything for a while.
I honestly only got half-way through before I stopped picking up my kindle for a week. It just went from 'plausible' to 'will he share his drugs with me?' In a dystopian YA psychological thriller, sure, you expect that. I wasn't expecting it here, and it just fit .... weirdly.
This is a good story and is fairly well written. It’s a tale of evil conspiracy and extreme violence with lots of bad guys. Richard Alan has written a number of non-fiction books but this is his first attempt at a fiction thriller. It does have its share of plot holes and inconsistencies. Also, some relationships and interactions between characters are trite, and as the story develops it becomes progressively more unrealistic. Towards the end the mild mannered computer geek protagonist turns into a dark knight super hero. It’s fast paced with many twists and turns and the author does a good job at keeping you guessing, so despite the flaws and anomalies I found it entertaining. The action is fast paced and the author does a good job at keeping you guessing. I haven’t had much luck lately with Unlimited books, so I was pleasantly surprised with this one. I can only rate this 3 stars because of the negatives noted but I still recommend reading it.
One of the best suspense thrillers I've ever read. This author has an amazing knowledge of what is possible. The scary part is that some of it might already be happening.
Pretty interesting to read. Lots of things happening that will surprise you.
Wow! What a great read, very visual. The pages turned without notice. I couldn't put it down. Fast-paced and gripping, it takes you through turns that arrive at completely unanticipated destinations, each one more exciting than the next.

The characters form a very well rounded cast. William Perkins, the main character, is an extremely bright young computer nerd who decides to push his chair away from the proverbial desk to experience the "real world" and hopefully to finally get laid. But as they say, be careful what you wish for. His encounter with a sexy bombshell with brains, leads him into another world of dangerous intrigue involving the mysterious Dyson Corporation.

This is a very well crafted story that teeters on the edge of reality and the scary consequences of futuristic possibilities.

I highly recommend it to anyone. Someone should make a movie out of it!
This book is exciting from beginning to end. Good characters, plenty of action, and a number of plot twists that keep the reader guessing. Best of all, it has unique scenes, filled with the kind of fascinating details that makes you wish you were an electronics nerd or a highly skilled hacker. The Candy Man is a visual read, particulary in regard to the ending--and it would make a great movie. It contains all of the excitment of sci-fi, but no matter how far out, it always stays on the edge of believable situtations and plausable truths. Read it, you'll love it! [...]
